Tuesday, April 9, 2024, will go down in historical past. It’s the day that far-right extremists received what they needed in Arizona: a near-total ban on abortion. It’s the day the Arizona Supreme Court docket turned the clock again 160 years—to a time earlier than girls may vote and earlier than Arizona was even a state. It’s a day that we are going to look again on with disgrace and horror.

Like so many Arizona mothers, my first thought was of my daughter, who was born final July in a post-Roe America. I haven’t been capable of wrap my thoughts round the truth that my daughter’s rights had been ripped away from her, that she may very effectively develop up in a world the place she has much less freedom than her mom and grandmothers had.

The inevitable penalties of this abortion ban for ladies and ladies of her technology are virtually too horrible to consider. We’ve all heard the tales about life pre-Roe: younger ladies and victims of rape or incest compelled to provide beginning or search harmful back-alley abortions, medical doctors and nurses who face jail time for daring to offer abortion care, girls dying from lack of entry to complete reproductive healthcare.
